With one of the most amazing HAB videos we've ever seen, team Aero-PUTRA demonstrated their home made fixed wing unmanned aerial vehicle that was carried up on a high altitude balloon and then had a controlled descent down to the their launch site - all the while testing several different science experiments that the team put together. The video that won 1st place for Best Video is well worth the watch! Congrats team!!
From the team: "On May 02, 2016, High Altitude Fixed Wing Experimental Platform was flown by Aero-PUTRA Space team with a 1600 g balloon and 2.5 kg payload (fixed wing). It was launched from Paddy field of Kampung Chui Chak, Langkap Perak, Malaysia (4° 2'31.62"N 101°10'4.45"E) at 12:00 pm. It was carrying a High Altitude Aerosol Sampling and Shape Memory Alloy experiment on board. This flight was fully controlled by the control module system, as the balloon reached 108268 ft the balloon burst and began its free fall, which is then slowed down by the parachute at 88582.7 ft. During descent, the release mechanism was activated to release the parachute and the fixed wing began the autonomous mission back to the desired landing site which was Paddy Fied Felcra Seberang Perak, Perak, Malaysia (4° 3'31.51"N 100°51'54.00"E) where after arriving at the landing coordinate the fixed wing began to loiter autonomously to descend slowly before the ground station controller took over control of the autopilot to make a smooth landing. After 02 hours 48 minutes the fixed wing was safely landed by manual control 50 m from ground station. All the experiments and system hardware were recovered with very minimal damage the fixed wing body."
