We're working on launching a HAB from El Salvador, and based on the country's geography and weather patterns, we are seriously considering a flight plan that has us landing in the pacific ocean. Luckily, we have access to a boat with which we don't foresee any issues in being able to arrive at the landing site relatively quickly, but there are two issues:
- Payload survival on landing - we would need to make sure the payload floats, does not break apart upon landing in the ocean, and that our internal components are not exposed to seawater.
- Out in the pacific ocean we wouldn't have access to internet, so we would merely be depending on the GPS system on the boat to determine our location relative to the HAB, along with any information relayed to us by our team on the mainland via UHF radio (still deciding between using a SPOT or an APRS transmitter)
We were wondering if anyone has faced a similar challenge in landing a payload on water.
Any thoughts are helpful!
