Airbus Sustainability -
Sustainable growth is critical to the future of the aviation industry and life on Earth. By accelerating global weather sensing at scale, Project Monark aims to help future-proof both. To do so, the team is focused on scaling up weather-related measurements using commercial aircraft, weather balloons and autonomous flying platforms in order to directly and significantly benefit both weather forecasting and commercial aviation.
This project explores the possibilities of using high performance, compact aircraft based on Paragliders for research, climate science, and operational measurements. The para-sounde was able to fly home to a known location. Indicating that reuseable, high fidelity payloads on weather balloons can be safely returned to be picked up and flown again.
Monark is run out of Acubed (A^3) Airbus's pioneering arm in the Silicon Valley, California.
There are three core topics that Monark is working on:
1. Advanced Weather Analytic Tools
2. Aircraft as Weather Sensors
3. Global Sensing at Scale
